44.07 War had gone away, but hardship had come in its place. Now there were three men who each stole a sack of grain from different owners, and they were all caught.

The first owner brought his thief to the deputy. The maidens, discussing it, concluded unanimously that he had acted in accordance with the law.

The second owner took the grain back from his thief and let him go in peace. The maidens said he had done well.

But the third owner went to his thief’s house and, when he saw how famine had set up its throne there, he went back and returned with a wagon full of supplies with which he drove need from their hearth.

Frya’s maidens had been gathered round him and written his deed in the Eternal Book, and all his shortcomings had been erased. It was reported to the honorable mother and she saw that it was heralded throughout the land.
