    4. Gosa’s Prophecy

142.01 This was left by Gosa:

    All people, hail!

I have nominated no honorable mother, because I knew of none, and it is better for you to have none than one on whom you cannot rely.

A bad time has passed by, but another approaches. Earth did not bring it forth and Wralda did not create it; it comes from the East, from the bosom of the priests. It shall breed so much suffering that Earth cannot drink all the blood of her slain children. It shall spread darkness over the spirit of mankind, like thunderclouds over sunlight. Everywhere and in every way, deception and idolatry shall challenge freedom and justice. Justice and freedom shall perish, and we with them.

But this victory will engender its own loss. Of three ideals shall our descendants teach both their people and the slave folk the meaning, they are: solidarity,[1] freedom, and justice. At first they shall glimmer, thereafter struggling with darkness until everyone’s hearts and heads become bright and clear.

Then shall bondage be swept from Earth, like thunderclouds by the gale, and no idolatrous rites shall avail to prevent it.

    Gosa

    Notes

    1. ‘solidarity’ (MÉNA LJAFDE) — lit. ‘communal love’, interpreted as ‘love for the community’. Since MÉNA LJAFDE are two words, WORDA is translated as ‘ideals’ instead of the more obvious ‘words’.
