CHERKE, plural CHERKA

  • church - English
  • tsjerke - Frisian
  • kerk - Dutch
  • Kirche - German
  • kirke - Norse, Danish
  • kyrka - Swedish
  • kirkju - Icelandic
  • kirik - Estonian
  • kirkko - Finnish

Although the obvious cognate is chruch, it was translated by Ott as temple, because the former has become mostly associated to Christianity.

The word is only used in a negative context in Oera Linda. If the Fryas had anything like temples themselves (for example Tanfana, referred to by Tacitus), they were not referred to in any of the texts.

Note: the only other word starting with CH- is CHELKA (chalice, Dutch: kelk).

Near Egmuda, where the burg Forana had once stood, they built a temple, even larger and richer than Askar had built at Staveren.
